Why don’t you talk about price very much?

Based on your feedback, we talk more about price now than in the past, but we haven’t done it much before for three main reasons. First, prices are incredibly dynamic. What one passenger pays could be completely different from what the person next to her pays. This is because pricing depends on any number of factors including, but not limited to, when a ticket was booked, the starting or ending point of a given trip, or even the way a passenger booked it! Second, I figure the easiest way for anyone interested in taking a particular journey for themselves to find the price is to simply look up the price for their given circumstance. Their price will, by definition, be different from mine! Finally, because pricing changes with time, including the price in my video will render it less accurate before I even post it! I do my best to make our videos as evergreen as possible.

What do you do for a living?

I started traveling as a result of my consulting work for my company. It kept me going a fair amount and I used to watch videos on YouTube about people's flights as entertainment instead of TV. One day, it occurred to me I could make similar videos, so I tried it out. It was rough at first, but was also a ton of fun. As the years have gone by, I've learned a lot and the YouTube channel has grown, which allows us to take some trips using ad revenue from the channel. It's kind of weird to say, but it's also pretty incredible that my passion for travel and video editing has turned into a way to travel and edit videos even more!

What’s your favorite airline?

I truly don’t have a “favorite!” The simplest way I know to answer is to say, my favorite airline is whichever airline I’m flying next!

What’s your favorite airplane?

I don’t have a “favorite” plane. It’s whatever plane I’m booked onto next! That said, I really enjoy trips on the A350 because it’s so comfortable. The A380 is always a special treat. Any flight on a 747 is, for want of a better word, “magical.” I think the 727 is one of the most beautiful airplanes ever to take to the air. And the airplane I’m sorry never to have flown was Concorde.

What’s your favorite place you’ve been?

There are really three answers to that question. First, my favorite trip I’ve taken was to Bolivia. I spent around ten days exploring the country and loved every second of it! My favorite city to visit is Cape Town. It’s got it all! Unbelievable scenery, incredible people, so much to do, and delicious food. Finally, the place I always way to get back to is New Zealand (but mostly the South Island)!

I’m afraid of flying, what do you recommend?

I know how powerful a fear of flying can be. So I definitely understand your anxiety. The best advice I can give you is to focus on the thousands of people - literally thousands - who have worked to make your flight a success! From the engineers and mechanics who built your plane and designed the air traffic control procedures, to the pilots and cabin crew who ensure your safety in the air. Not to mention the ground crews....I could go on. There are a lot of people who work very hard to keep you safe!

I’d like to get started on YouTube, what tips do you have?

The best "piece" of advice I can offer anyone starting this journey is actually twofold. First, always remain authentic. Make content you enjoy watching and don't try to "be" anyone else. Make content YOU want to watch. If you remain true to yourself, an audience of like-minded people who are drawn to you and your content will join you. It probably won't happen overnight (although for a few people, it does!!), but you will eventually have a community. You might have to talk into the abyss for a while, but they'll come! So long as you follow point number 2...and that is to publish consistently. YouTube rewards consistent publication. Engage in a regular publishing schedule. Doing this will get your audience used to watching your content. Your content will become part of their routines. There's a reason television shows have regular schedules (e.g., Tuesday's at 7:00 p.m. Eastern, or whatever). For example, we publish every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Eastern. Maybe this is just me, but that regular schedule also serves to help keep me motivated to regularly create content. Of course, I'll take a week off every now and then, but generally, we keep going. Also, SEE number 1…if you make content YOU want to watch, it’ll be easier to keep up with it! Of course, there are tons of technical tips and tricks you'll learn with time, but that comes from making content, listening to your audience, and watching your analytics...only way to do that, though, is to learn over time. Finally, and most importantly, have FUN....if you're not enjoying it, it'll be really hard to maintain point number 2.
